Contractor Tower Painting at PJ2T

25-26 September 2007

After over six years of maintaining the PJ2T towers by ourselves, with all painting and scraping having been done by CCC members W0CG, WB9Z, and N8NR, we were finally able to hire a tower contractor to do part of this work. Both of the Rohn towers need to be painted every six months. With help from these contractors in November and May to do most of the Europe tower, we expect to be able to keep up with the rest using our own labor. It's expensive -- coating the top half of the Europe tower cost almost $1400, pretty much an FT-1000MP, but it is imperative to keep up with this maintenance.

Marise, one of the two commercial riggers preparing to climb on 25 September 2007. The black pack on her back is a water bladder with a drinking tube over her right shoulder.

Casper working at the top of the Europe tower after I "trained" him up there earlier. He was amazed at how difficult and slow the painting work turned out to be.  We used white epoxy over grey to be able to track exactly what had and had not been painted and to decrease the chance of misses.

Marise on the way to join Casper. After an hour he is not moving very fast, finding out how much detail is needed and how crowded it is at the top.

Marise at the South America tribander.  It felt good to see someone else on the tower for a change.

This view vividly shows the W0CG/N8LGP boom sidemounts. After over a year in the air they are corrosion free. Casper is at the 20 meter boom in this view. Why we are loud mostly everywhere.

If you don't climb, this is the view you're missing. My friend John Shovic is standing by at the bottom in case of problems. Note the mesh dish TV antenna, which also needs to be epoxy coated. The bottom of the top plate, well-coated.

September 25: After six very tough hours on the tower, Casper is amazed that the epoxy won't come off his wristwatch. September 26: The next day he came back with a painter's suit. Here, after six more hours they are cleaning up, accompanied by another professional climber. Herko says the girl on the right can lift a bundle of hardline up a tower like a winch.

October 3: I inspected the work. After a little over a week there are already some minor rust blooms. This is inevitable and not a reflection on the quality of the painters' work. The top of the lower bearing plate, 3 October 2007.

Back side of the CG/LGP sidemount at the 15 meter Europe yagi. Good epoxy coating on the top guy attachment bracket. The rest of the guy deadend is encased in putty.

This is just below the level of the 15 yagi -- a quality coating has been applied. Just above the 10 meter beam.

Looking down, you can see where the white stops halfway down the tower. The bottom five sections are not the contractor's responsibility.
