Notes on K3TUP TS-940

History

Bought new by K3TUP, souped up for 200 watts output. Sold to KB3X and then bought by W0CG.

February 2001

Failed in use by W6KK. Microtech could not repair. Repaired by Groton Electronics in 2002, who found many, many open solder connections on the boards.

October 2002

Piexx serial interface board installed by W0CG.

November 2002

Returned to Curacao but failed in first hour, with PLL failing and display going to all dots 1 second after turn on.

W4PA reports that all early Kenwoods have a problem with failing in this way in heat because Kenwood used the wrong potting compound for soldering the boards.

XCVR left in place at the station in hope of repairing by resoldering boards.

July 2003

Same symptoms after testing on Curacao. Returned to States in July and shipped to Groton Electronics.

October 2003

Groton Electronics found nothing inop, even after two months of bench test. I'll keep it in the U.S., however, after two successive failures in Curacao.
