Notes on PC 3

September 2002

New MODEM installed September 2002. Computer is flaky and ports freeze randomly, requires cold reboots.

November 2004

After several years of good service as the Internet machine at Station # 3, it reverted to 640 x 480. Inspection of the video board showed severe buildup of salt on the traces. Could not repair board.

Installed on 23 Nov a Matrox MGA video adapter, correcting the video display problem. Cannibalized the MODEM from this machine.

Put this PC into the closet in reserve.

7 September 2005

As of 7 Sept 2005 lost NIC driver and has BIOS boot error.

13 November 2005

F1 past the BIOS error messsage and system starts normally and works correctly. In reserve in East closet.

12 February 2009

Must press F1 to get past BIOS message. System starts OK but does not see a NIC. NIC card was horribly corroded. Replaced it with new NIC from Box 1. Installed driver for NIC from the floppy in the box. (It is a Linksys Network Everywhere Model NC100 v2 card.) Installed drivers for this card from the enclosed floppy (now in software caddy in radio closet) and it worked fine. Set up the gateway and DNS addresses on the new NIC. Made sure dialup adapter was set to "Obtain an IP address automatically. Installed WL 10.69. Uninstalled ZoneAlarm. Writelog appears to be 100% working now on the network. Machine is good except for the need to intervene with F1 at bootup.
